Hydrogen; building a clean fuel infrastructure
As transportation carbon emissions contribute substantially to global CO2 production, many fleet operators are adopting hydrogen vehicles to reduce or eliminate their transport-based carbon footprint. Providing on-site hydrogen generation, storage and dispensing systems for refuelling eliminates the carbon footprint and need for conventional fuel supply chain transportation. As carbon emissions from transportation contribute a substantial portion of global CO2 production, many fleet operators are looking to reduce or eliminate their transport-based carbon footprint through the adoption of hydrogen vehicles. Provision of on-site Hydrogen generation, storage and dispensing systems for the purpose of vehicle refuelling; eliminates the carbon footprint and need for conventional fuel supply chain transportation.
The hydrogen internal combustion engine (HICE) provides a transition to the ultimate goal of a cost effective fuel cell vehicle. Not only do HICEs retain existing production techniques, maintenance, residual vehicle values and supply chains, they may additionally be configured as bi-fuel vehicles; this allows for them to fill at existing refuelling stations when hydrogen is not available.
Whilst ITM's initial work with home refuelling of single vehicles demonstrated hydrogen's versatility, the benefits of hydrogen for return-to-depot applications was quickly recognised. Unlike pure battery vehicles which require considerable lengths of time to charge; hydrogen vehicles may be rapidly refuelled several times a day and as such are less restrictive for daily operation, shift patterns or fleets where vehicle down-time is critical.
Many refuelling solutions rely upon the delivery of compressed hydrogen; but this comes at the price of increased energy usage or carbon footprint. The logical solution is to generate gas on-site, thus eliminating these issues. ITMs fleet refuelling solutions include electrolysis, compression, gas treatment and storage, which is modular and scalable allowing for expanding fleets or increased hydrogen demand.
In order to cater for a wide range of fleet applications, ITM can offer expertise in the design and build of all aspects of vehicular refuelling from single vehicles to large return to depot fleets. All ITM refuelling products can be configured to meet the fuel purity and pressure requirements of fuel cell and HICE vehicles alike.
Graham joined ITM on 29 June 2009 as CEO. Before joining Graham was CEO of Sensortec and Universal Sensors, founding CEO of Metalysis Ltd, a spin out of Cambridge University, and founding CEO of Antenova Ltd. Graham spent 11 years in the power industry developing conductive polymers, fuel cells, batteries and energy storage technologies. He was Business Development Manager for National Power Plc and International Power Plc and developed the Regenesys energy storage technology which was acquired by RWE from Innogy. Graham specialises in turning intellectual property and technology into products; identifying the product strategy and business model required to enter a target market and generate growth. He has a Degree in Physics, Phd in Materials Technology and an MBA.
